The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) will be hosting two New Teachers’ Conference this year. One Metro conference in Vancouver in February and one regional conference in Nelson in May. The conferences are designed specifically for teachers and teachers teaching on call in their first five (5) years of teaching, as well as teacher candidates.

The District PD committee has established a New Teacher Grant of $2000 for the 2020-2021 school year. This is for any teacher who has 5 years or less teaching experience in BC, or any teacher who is new to their role. If you have used all of your individual school PD funds then you can apply for additional funds to supplement your PD expenses this year. There is no guaranteed amount; the amount you receive is a function of the number of applicants and the amounts claimed.

The BCTF Handbook for TTOCs and new teachers: The practice of teaching contains information on the history of the Federation and on a variety of practical topics, such as classroom management, reporting requirements, working with parents, and sources of help for new teachers and TTOCs.
A new teacher may be a teacher new to the profession, a beginning teacher and/or a teacher teaching on call (in the first 5 years of their career), a teacher new to a classroom assignment or having a significant change of assignment, a teacher new to teaching in BC, or a teacher returning to the profession.
